Throughout the city, Public Works is responsible to oversee major improvements for the City's water, sewer, streets and intersections. These projects are often referred to as the bricks and mortar, or infrastructure, which all cities need to provide essential services and support new growth. Improvement projects can range from a few weeks to a multi-year phase project, depending on the involvement of the work that is needed. Streets, Fire and Police stations, Water Treatment Plants, Parks, Landscape Beautification projects are also examples of improvement projects.

Outside agencies, such as IDOT; Illinois Tollway, Kane County and utility companies also have ongoing projects within the city. Staff from Public Works review submitted plans from these agencies in an effort to coordinate traffic control and relocation of utilities as well as many other areas involved in large projects
