36th dr. martin luther king, jr. celebration

Lady Justice

"The whirlwind of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges."  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Each year, the City of Elgin Human Relations Commission takes great pride in presenting a weekend of activities celebrating the life of one of our country’s greatest civil rights leaders, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This year in lieu of the Prayer Breakfast, Dr. King's birthday was celebrated virtually, but lost none of its power.  Please enjoy the 36th annual celebration below.

To date we have collected 4,352 lbs of food and over $3,700 in cash donations.  That's equivalent to about 34,000 lbs of food!

Food DriveFor the past 9 years, the Dr. King Food Drive has collected thousands of pounds of food for the less fortunate in our community. Our 2021 goal is to collect and distribute 80,000 pounds of food and household items for our local food pantries. Every $1.00 collected equals 8 pounds of food. With your generous donation, we can reach our goal.

Look for drive thru food drives in your area.  We will announce these events on this page and on the city's Facebook pages. You do not need to wait for an announcement, click here to donate to the 10th Dr. King Food Drive.  If you would like to help with the food drive, call Joe Wars at 847-742-2228.
