Today Elgin’s population is more than 115,000 strong. For many years, the Elgin Police Department has been practicing a community policing philosophy that has had a tremendous impact on crime in our community. Currently, our crime rate is at a 49-year low. By using an aggressive and practical policing approach that partners the department with community residents, businesses and civic organizations, we have all been able to improve our neighborhoods and city.

The department's authorized sworn officer strength is 184 officers. Through technological advances and by staffing units with officers whose personal and professional strengths are in the areas they are working for, we constantly strive to staff our units with the best representation of those strengths needed in each specific unit.
