Medication Disposal

The police department hosts a dropbox to aid with the disposal of unwanted and unused medications. Proper disposal practices help keep our environment safe from toxins. There is no fee for this program. To utilize the program, please follow the steps below.

MEDICATIONS ACCEPTED BY THE PROGRAM 

  • prescription and non-prescription tablets, capsules and pills
  • medication is to be removed from the original packaging, blister packs, and/or containers and placed in a non-leaking, sealable clear plastic bag, such as a plastic zip-lock type bag
  • no more than 1 gallon size sealable clear bag of medication per Elgin resident/per day

MEDICATIONS NOT ACCEPTED BY THE PROGRAM

  • sharps, needles and Epi-pens (click here for more information on this topic)
  • IV bags
  • thermometers
  • salves and liquid medications
  • any medicines brought in from nursing homes, clinics, doctors’ offices, or any other entity which distributes medications will NOT be accepted
