STEM SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM (10 OPENINGS) Now accepting applications through 4/30/2021

Are you a high school junior or senior and an Elgin resident? This summer we are hiring 10 students who are interested in a STEM career in our ITS, Police, Water, Parks, Engineering and Fire Departments.  

ITS DepartmentLearn about software and hardware used by the city.  Perform hands-on fixes and preventative maintenance on computers.  Assist with software upgrades and more.
Police DepartmentPerform statistical crime analysis and data interpretation.  Assist with drone maintenance and flying, crime scene mapping, traffic crash reconstruction.
Water DepartmentWater sample collection and analysis, help collect data on water service line replacements, assist utility locators find water, sewer, gas and other below surface systems, assist with review of plans for water system infrastructure.
Parks DepartmentWork with the Hawthorne Hills Nature Center Naturalist assisting with restoration efforts, designing educational programming, and giving tours to visitors.
Lords Park ZooCare for, feed and ensure the safety of domesticated and wild animals in the Lords Park Zoo (subject to Zoo opening in 2021).
Engineering DepartmentWork out in the field and in the office, reviewing documents, doing research and learning all aspects of civil engineering.
Fire DepartmentAssist with fire prevention planning and inspections, ride along with Battalion Chiefs and learn about emergency operations, learn about the mechanics and math of fire suppression and the science behind fire.

For individuals who have not passed or yet qualified for the licensed environmental health practitioner examination.  A two year apprenticeship during which you will practice environmental and public health in support of and under the general supervision of a licensed environmental health practitioner.


Now accepting applications thru 4/30/2021

Work with Nature Center Supervisor and Naturalist staff to gain experience in the following program areas: family and youth programming, special events and projects.

The Environmental Education intern is a 12 week; 40 hours per week position.
