1. How often is the test?

The City of Elgin typically tests every eighteen (18) to twenty-four (24) months for the position of Police Officer, depending how fast the list is exhausted.

2. How I do find out that Elgin is testing?

3. What's the process from beginning to end?

First, ensure that you meet the minimum requirements of the position. Submit an application with the City of Elgin. Submit all required documents with the application. After you have completed the application process you will take the written test for Police Officer. If you are one of the top 100 candidates that pass the written test you will then be scheduled for an in depth background investigation. Once the in depth background investigation is complete an interview is set up with our Fire and Police Board. Candidates passing the interview with the Fire and Police Board will be given any preference points that apply to them and will be ranked on an eligibility list. Once a position becomes available the candidate who is next on the eligibility list must successfully complete a psychological exam and physical fitness exam. After successfully completing the psychological exam and physical fitness exam, the candidate begins their career with the City of Elgin.

4. What kind of test does Elgin use?

The City of Elgin currently uses the National Testing Network exam. The standard tests are video based tests and written tests administered at a computer workstation or in a group setting, depending on where the test is taken. The National Testing Network website can be found by clicking here.

5. What does it cost to take the test?

The cost depends on where the test is taken - free if you take the test at a location administered by the city, and $40 if you take it through National Testing Network.

6. Are there study materials?

While a study guide is not necessary, the National Testing Network does offer practice tests at a cost of $24.99. Practice tests are on the National Testing Network website.

7. How do I get my POWER test card?

The City of Elgin does not accept the POWER Test card, but administers the POWER Test at the time of the written test.  This process does not give the candidate a POWER Test card, but allows the candidate to use the result of the test in lieu of presenting a POWER Test card. The specific dates and times for this option are limited and times for this option can be found on the posting.

8. What kind of background check does Elgin do?

The City conducts an in depth background investigation which includes a complete criminal history check at the national, state and local level; complete traffic history at the state and local level; review of employment history with prior employers and possibly current employer; verification of military status (if applicable); personal/phone interviews with personal references.

9. Are there any preference points?

Awarding of preference points is done after the final stage of the process for original appointment.  The maximum number of fourteen (14) points for persons receiving veteran's preference points and a maximum of twelve (12) points for persons not claim veteran's preference may be awarded to any person during the appointment process. Check the job posting for the points associated with each preference area.

10. How long is the list good for?

Our list expires after two years.

11. Does the City of Elgin allow lateral transfers from other departments?

The City of Elgin does not permit lateral transfers from other police departments at this time.

12. What if I’ve been a police officer and I’m over 35?

Police officers and individuals with prior military experience over the age of 35 may test for a position with the city. Check the posting for more details.
