3. How Do I Become a Firefighter/What Requirements Do I Need?

The process for applying for and being hired as a Firefighter/Paramedic with the City of Elgin is governed by the civil service code. The Elgin Fire Department conducts a civil service test for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic every two years. 4. How Do I Receive a Copy of a Report (Fire/EMS/Billing/Inspection Report)?

To obtain a copy of a fire report or an inspection report go to: http://cityofelgin.org/63/Freedom-of-Information-Act-FOIA .  Make sure that you include the date and address of the fire incident or the address of the inspection request.

To obtain a copy of an EMS report, an attorney will need to provide an authorization of medical release signed by the patient and patient information along with the date and address of the incident.   Contact the fire department administration at 847-931-6175 for guidance on how to proceed with the request.

To obtain a copy of your own personal report, an individual will need to come in person to the fire department headquarters located at 550 Summit St.

6. What is the Fire Department's Insurance Service Office (ISO) Rating?

The Elgin Fire Department is an Insurance Service Office (ISO) Class II Fire Department. Out of more than 45,000 fire departments in the United States, less than 1,600 have achieved an ISO rating of Class II or better. This means the Elgin Fire Department ranks in the top 3.5% of all fire departments nationwide. An ISO rating of 2 means that taxpayers in Elgin pay less than 96.5% of the country to ensure their homes and businesses. This rating is based on the amount of training the Elgin Fire Department members conduct annually as well as command and control practices, water supply and availability, equipment capability, and response times among other criteria.

10. Why Does a Fire Engine/Truck and Ambulance Respond to EMS Calls?

In order to provide the highest level of EMS care to our residents, the Elgin Fire Department operates all Fire Engines and Ambulances as Advanced Life Support (ALS) vehicles and each unit is always staffed with at least one paramedic. For EMS calls where the closest unit is an Engine, the Engine will respond to begin patient care while awaiting the arrival of the ambulance. Even if the Ambulance is the closest unit, if the nature of the call is more serious or has the potential to require additional personnel the Engine will follow the ambulance to assist with patient care. When necessary, a paramedic or two from the assisting Engine will jump in the back of the Ambulance on the way to the hospital to continue assisting with patient care until the patient has been transferred to the Hospital’s Emergency Department.

11. Does the Fire Department Respond to Lock-Outs?

If there is a child or pet locked inside your home or vehicle, the Fire Department will respond and assist with unlocking the vehicle. If there is no life or fire hazard, the Fire Department will not respond and a locksmith or roadside assistance would be the best options to consider for assistance.

To request a smoke detector, call Fire Department headquarters at 847-931-6175. You will need to fill out a required request form, which will be provided to you.

20. I Am Driving Down the Road and See a Fire Engine/Ambulance With Lights/Sirens, What Do I Do?

The Elgin Fire Department reminds all drivers to be aware of their surroundings at all times and requests your courtesy to responding fire department apparatus; if their lights and sirens are on they are responding to someone’s emergency – please treat the vehicles as if they are responding to one of your family members’ emergencies. RED LIGHTS GO RIGHT is the saying to remember. If an emergency vehicle is approaching from either the front or the rear, slow down and move to the right to allow them to get through. If you are stopped at an intersection and can safely move to the right, do so; if you are unable to move, stay put if the emergency vehicle can proceed around you.

21. How do I dispose of household hazardous waste, such as chemicals, paint, solvent, pesticides/insecticides, motor oil, etc?

Elgin residents have an easy way to dispose of household hazardous waste (HHW) AND to recycle electronics through the At Your Door service.

 

You can schedule for HHW and electronics to be picked up at your residence as part of your regular Waste Management service!
